So we usually pick up the Sunday Oregonian (major newspaper in the area) and inside is the Parade magazine. It had its annual “What People Earn” salary survey. On the cover, right next to Jay Leno, is a woman from The Dalles, Oregon . Her name is DeeAnn, she is 30, she lists her occupation as Medical Marijuana provider and that her salary is $17,000 per year.
So here is the problem. We have medical marijuana in the fine state of Oregon. In fact, as of the 1st of April 2010 there are 32,929 Medical marijuana card holders and 16,922 Medical Marijuana providers referred to as Caregivers. (http://egov.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/ommp/data.shtml) Basically a Caregiver is allowed to grow a certain number of Marijuana plants to supply a particular Card holder.
Here is where DeeAnn gets in trouble. Oregon state statute 475.304 Marijuana grow site registration system; rules. Section 7 states:
“(7) A registry identification cardholder or the designated primary caregiver of the cardholder may reimburse the person responsible for a marijuana grow site for the costs of supplies and utilities associated with the production of marijuana for the registry identification cardholder. No other costs associated with the production of marijuana for the registry identification cardholder, including the cost of labor, may be reimbursed.”
However she states that she was paid $17,000 dollars for her services of supplying pot. So basically she just admitted that she is committing a felony. Not only does she admit that she is committing a felony, but she does it in a national paper. (Parade magazine circulation: 32 million copies (http://www.parade.com/corporate/parade_history.html) I mean really? Do you not know the rules? You just said you sold $17,000 worth of pot last year. It’s still illegal to sell pot in the state of Oregon, not to mention it’s still a federal offence. Maybe you should review the law before you go to prison. Anybody ever admit to something they shouldn’t have?
