“Questionable tuna” would be an excellent name for a garage band.

So I saw this article on Yahoo the other day (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100520/ap_on_re_us/us_plum_island_sale) and thought “This is just about the stupidest thing I have ever seen.” The government is planning to close down The Plum Island Animal disease Center…and move it to Kansas. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plum_Island_Animal_Disease_Center) Plum island is a 840 acre island located a mile and half off the eastern tip of Long Island’s north fork. At this laboratory they study animal diseases such as hoof and mouth disease, which is highly contagious to livestock.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoof_and_mouth) According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office “Other pathogens known to have been maintained at Plum Island could also cause illness and death in humans.”

Sex in Public

April 24, 2010 by Dan

So I come home from the store yesterday around 7:30 pm and there are two people having sex in the hot tub of my apartment complex. My wife and I have lived in this complex for about three years and unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence. Once we even came home and a couple was filming themselves having sex in the hot tub. We could see the red light on the camera flashing next to the tub as they were going at it. However, what made this display special was that it wasn’t even dark. I mean its bad enough that you are having sex in a community hot tub, but to not even wait until the cover of night? I get that you two are really into each other and maybe even get off at the thought of people watching you do it, but you should realize that not everyone wants to see you do it. We don’t want to be a part of your sexual games. Thanks for thinking of us, but we will pass.

Now some people might think “Oh he is lurking in the bushes and this hot tub is not visible without some effort.” Unfortunately, that is not the case. It is an outdoor hot tub surrounded by a parking lot on three sides. I have to drive by it to get to my parking space which is at most 40 feet from the hot tub. The other really nasty part of this story is to see all the people that use that hot tub during the day and probably never think about all of the bodily fluids floating around it there. Get your kids out of that human soup!

Anybody else have problems with people having sex outdoors?

So recently I posted a blog about an article in the Parade magazine about what people earn. On the cover of the Parade was a spot about DeeAnn Cushman from Dallas Oregon (Link to her spot here. http://www.parade.com/news/what-people-earn/slideshows/real-people-salary-2010.html?index=42) . DeeAnn was nice enough to comment on the blog I posted:

“Hello, In response to the nice blog you posted. My name is DeeAnn Cushman. I work for an organization called MAMA. MAMA And I PROVIDE medical marijuana patients with education about… Check out the website. Thank you for your intrest become educated.” (http://www.mamas.org/)

So DeeAnn works for MAMA (Mothers Against Misuse and Abuse) which is a non-profit whose goals are (per their website http://www.mamas.org/goals.htm ): “to provide current, scientific drug education to all ages, to offer social and recreational alternatives to drug use, to promote better communication between policy makers, educators, law enforcement, service providers, seniors, parents and youth. To question techniques of advertising all drugs and advertising’s effects on the entire population.”
So now we have cleared up that DeeAnn is not selling medical marijuana but works for MAMA as a provider of medical marijuana education and information. I am still left to wonder who put that she is a medical marijuana provider instead of a medical marijuana information provider in the Parade article. Maybe someone at Parade owes her an apology?

So we usually pick up the Sunday Oregonian (major newspaper in the area) and inside is the Parade magazine. It had its annual “What People Earn” salary survey. On the cover, right next to Jay Leno, is a woman from The Dalles, Oregon . Her name is DeeAnn, she is 30, she lists her occupation as Medical Marijuana provider and that her salary is $17,000 per year.

So here is the problem. We have medical marijuana in the fine state of Oregon. In fact, as of the 1st of April 2010 there are 32,929 Medical marijuana card holders and 16,922 Medical Marijuana providers referred to as Caregivers. (http://egov.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/ommp/data.shtml) Basically a Caregiver is allowed to grow a certain number of Marijuana plants to supply a particular Card holder.

Here is where DeeAnn gets in trouble. Oregon state statute 475.304 Marijuana grow site registration system; rules. Section 7 states:

“(7) A registry identification cardholder or the designated primary caregiver of the cardholder may reimburse the person responsible for a marijuana grow site for the costs of supplies and utilities associated with the production of marijuana for the registry identification cardholder. No other costs associated with the production of marijuana for the registry identification cardholder, including the cost of labor, may be reimbursed.”

However she states that she was paid $17,000 dollars for her services of supplying pot. So basically she just admitted that she is committing a felony. Not only does she admit that she is committing a felony, but she does it in a national paper. (Parade magazine circulation: 32 million copies (http://www.parade.com/corporate/parade_history.html) I mean really? Do you not know the rules? You just said you sold $17,000 worth of pot last year. It’s still illegal to sell pot in the state of Oregon, not to mention it’s still a federal offence. Maybe you should review the law before you go to prison. Anybody ever admit to something they shouldn’t have?

2 Ipads in every garage?

April 6, 2010 by Dan

So I don’t really understand why everyone is getting so excited about the Ipad. I get that it is a big step forward in the evolution of how we use computers, but the Ipad itself seems ridiculous. It doesn’t multi-task, it doesn’t have a camera, or a keyboard, it doesn’t support flash, it only has a 1ghz processor and it’s $499 dollars for the 16gb version (I have had usb flash drives that size) and it’s an extra $130 bucks for the 3G compatible version.

From all the hype I hear on the news and the net you would think it was the second coming or something. Let me know when you have one that is better than a computer from 2001.  Am I the only one who thinks that this is just a stupid waste of money?

I took a trip to Seaside Oregon this week. My wife and I stayed in a oceanfront room. We went to the local candy shop and I finally brought myself to try the chocolate covered bacon. I can say that there are many things that should be covered in chocolate and bacon is not one of them. It just tasted wrong. I love bacon. All kinds of bacon, but the mixing of the two flavors just sucked. I don’t know what kind of person enjoys this strange mixing, but I just can’t get behind it. Cover anything in chocolate but not meat.
